Kick in the Eye's OtherWorld BLOG Tuesday Febrauary 17th, 2009: Sea of Bitterness, from a songwriting perspective, was completed a couple years ago. In retrospect, I can see how the album and its Sea of Bitterness essence really reflected our head space at the time. We were living in the old paradigm back then; no wonder the reference to bitterness, drowning, darkness… It's true that today we are still surrounded by a Sea of Bitterness; the difference is now we understand it. Now we see it for what it is, as clear as day. (Maybe that's why we've already decided our next album will be titled Glass Ceiling.) This sea that we talk of is created by the wealthy, the powerful - but we are the ones living in it, wallowing in it, wasting away in it. We all know that absolute power corrupts absolutely, but do you know why? It's because the powerful will do ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING to retain power, and this "absolutely anything" always ends in things that are psychotically evil. All of our histories and literatures prove this over and over. The powerful today are the corporations, even the governments are controlled by them. What really convinced me of their power was the comparison to the omnipresence and omnipotence Catholic Church in Europe's past. The Church was utterly omnipresent; it was with you every moment of every day, holding your hand, guiding you through the different stages of your daily life, through your most important transitional stages, from birth to death. I can imagine how this was a nice feeling: this being taken care of, this guidance down the uncertain path of life. And the Catholic Church was supremely powerful; only the church could teach you about the world. It had a complete media monopoly. But it could also ease your every fear. You'd sit on Church's knee as he read you your books; you'd put your head on his shoulder as you spilled your guts. Part of its power was derived from the fact that it understood how your mind worked - it filled it! It could play on your psychology. It poured in all your knowledge, your lifestyle, your ideas of right and wrong, and cool and lame; it gave you your understanding, your paradigm. To follow it was the ONLY choice. So what changed? Well, a new Church initiative smacked so hard in the face of reason that people began to question even the most fundamental of their daily routines. The capitalist motive behind the indulgence was impossible to ignore: simple BUY your eternal happiness, your ticket to heaven.in the face of reason, an intitiative so contrary to even the most base logic, it became impossible to overlook: the indulgence. Corporations sell products that kill people and kill the earth. The sad thing is the consumer doesn't even know that the product he/she is enjoying WILL give him cancer. The citizen can't phathom the notion that the government is not looking out for her best interest. Surely, there are policies in place, regulations, standards, examiniations… Cancer kills one in two men and almost as many women. The shopper is completely tricked into thinking he/she has choice. You can chose from a myriad of products - any style, flavour, genre you desire. Just walk into a Wal-Mart or Superstore; the choices seem endless. Are they? Just try buying items that will not certainly lead to this earth's demise. Try buying a local product. Put "organic" in front of every item on your grocery list. Now walk into your favourite grocery store and have fun trying to complete your shopping! You'll be hopscotcing in your gas guzzler all across town. (Beware of the new corporate organic lines. Beware!) So you don't like cars, global warming? You can choose public transit, you know? Can you? Not really, the infrastructure is simply not there, not even close, and the demands of living in an industrial society ensure that you are worked like a dog, and do not have time to network with car pools. You hardly have enough time to regain your sanity at the end of a work day, week , month.. -by Marian Lochrie
